Copying Beethoven

I liked it! The music is very nice, of course, but the acting is even better. Ed Harris is excellent, and Diane Kruger is equally excellent!!! The ending is a bit weak. I was hoping they would play the opening scene again at the end - her riding in a carriage, with the music playing in her mind - because when it is shown at the beginning, you don't yet know what its all about.

Made of Honor

Silly! Silly! Silly!
Don't bother.

Leatherheads

Nothing much going on in this movie except the old-timey look and music. I'm not sure I even followed the story, actually......I might have fallen asleep!

Starting Out in the Evening

I Wasn't expecting this movie to be that good. But! This was the best movie I have seen in a long time. A MUST see!

Aiming to revive the faded career of ailing author Leonard Schiller (Frank Langella), enterprising graduate student Heather Wolfe (Lauren Ambrose) makes his novels the topic of her master's thesis. While Heather raises Leonard's hopes of a literary comeback, his middle-aged daughter (played by Lili Taylor) remains dubious.

Slipstream

Yikes!!! So many good actors but SO much noise and SO much confusion - I couldn't finish it! It was as if it was made by someone on Speed - having a nightmare!

Reservation Road

A good movie! I liked it.

P.S. I Love You

Just AWFUL!!!
Hillary Swank - who is usually very good - is so bad it's almost painful to watch her. Don't bother seeing it!
The two Irish guys in it are pretty cute, though!

Lars and the Real Girl

I loved this movie!
This is not really a comedy! That fact surprised me.
But it does have many wonderfully funny moments.
It is a delightful story with great performances, and it says SO much, so simply. I loved it! See it!!!

Into The Wild

I liked the book much better.

The scenery was beautiful, the directing was good, the young actor very good, and it was a well done movie. But something was missing - and it felt like it was something important missing.
I still feel the frustration of not really knowing who this young man was.
I liked it, but I liked the book much better.

Happy Easter!

Michael Clayton

Loved this movie. Best I've seen in a long time. I think it finally show the potential of George.
But I agree, not Best Picture stuff.

Blue State

This movie feels like a low budget, first-effort film. And yet, it kept me watching. It felt real. And you're along for the ride with the main character. I would call it SO-SO.

Martian Child

Predictable. But, if you like John and Joan Cusack, as I do, then its O.K.
Not great, but good enough. I'd give it a C.

Venus

What courage - to act an old, old man.....when you ARE an old, old man! He was very good in this. It reminds me of Henry Fonda in On Golden Pond - raging against old age, as his character - and probably even more so, in real life, when the cameras stopped rolling. He died soon after the film was shot.
In this movie, there is something uncomfortable in seeing a man of his age so enthralled with a young woman who could be his granddaughter. It felt as if he had never raised a daughter or loved a granddaughter - to be seeing her in a such a sexual way. In real life, most women would find his behavior disgusting if it was their own grandfather.
And yet, the truth in it speaks of two constants in life.
1) Old age craves youth and youth craves a nod of approval from age and wisdom.
2) Males adore, even worship, female beauty and youth. It's in their biology. And females need to be adored and worshipped. It's in their biology.
It was a good movie - an interesting slice of life - both sad and happy.

A Rumor of Angels

A Vanessa Redgrave film - and although I liked it very much, I can understand how some people would not. It's about her friendship with a young boy. What I liked was her character in the film - thought I would like to be just like her. And the setting is quite beautiful, too.

The Gathering Storm

I LOVE this movie!!!
Albert Finney plays Winston Churchill, and as he is amazing! Every role he plays - every time - just bowls me over. Some years ago, I saw him in a movie where he played a bus driver in England or Ireland. In one scene, he had to explain to his sister that he was gay. He was extraordinary. I would like to see it again, but I don't know the title. It might be an Irish film.
So, besides Finney and Vanessa Redgrave, The Gathering Storm was also beautifully written and beautifully filmed. I LOVED this movie!

Eastern Promises

Vigo was nominated for best actor, or supporting actor, for this film. He was very good, but the movie SHOULD have been better. It was an interesting story, but there seemed to be something missing, and it just went along and then ended. I'm not sure if its worth the trouble of renting and watching - and, oddly enough, I can't even say exactly why.

Feast of Love

This was so-so. I can't really say "Good movie - gotta see it." But it was sort of cute and fun. Morgan Freeman seems to be able to make ANYTHING he is in watchable.

Gone Baby Gone

This is a very interesting movie, and I would recommend it, but at the beginning, I wouldn't have thought so.
Casey Affleck took some getting used to, for me - didn't care for his acting and his voice at first, but by the end I liked him and his voice - alot. Amy Ryan is absolutely believable in her role, and Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman give their typically fine performances.
The story started to lose me half-way through, but then it picked up and surprised me at the end. All in all, it was very good and the moral dilemma, at the end, kept me thinking - long after the movie was over.

Venus

Peter O'Toole still has it. Old fucker that he is, he can still act. Great movie. The topic was a little strange but I think they handled it pretty well. Men will always wish for things they can never have. And will not know what to do with it when they have it. I just loved the way that he thought about things and observed the world around him.

American Gangster

This was a pretty good movie - slow at the start, though.
I usually love how Russel Crowe inhabits each character he plays, but this one was a bit different for me. He was, somehow, not as believable as he usually is - though more so by the end - and, at times, I could see the character he played in A Beautiful Mind.

Margot at the Wedding

I have no idea if this was good or not. I saw almost none of it and heard only some of it - because I put it on while I washed windows all over the house. Liberal use of the F word and quirky people with complicated relationships - is about all I really know of it. And now it must go back to the video store. I like all the actors in it, so it might be good. I would love to read a review from someone who ACTUALLY watched it! And then I might rent it again.

Michael Clayton

This is a very good movie - good performances, interesting - and I would recommend it to anyone - but, like all the other nominees for Best Picture, not that "knock-your-socks-off" great. Just good.

ELIZABETH

Good movie, Cate VERY good, Clive very appealing - interesting, because of the history - but I liked the first one better.

The Jane Austen Book Club

Most definitely a chick-flick! Cute and nice, but not at all something that would make me say " you gotta see it. " Actually, it was pretty forgetable.

Bubble

Boring! I can't believe this is a Steven Soderbergh movie.

Set in a crumbling Ohio town that revolves around the local doll factory, Steven Soderbergh's offbeat film follows the antics of townsfolk turned detectives who try to unravel a murder mystery -- and end up discovering a bizarre love triangle. In sharp contrast to his high-budget Ocean's Eleven remake, Soderbergh uses low-cost digital camerawork and employs no-name actors in this quirky small-town drama.

Don't waste your hour & a half. Wash dishes instead.

First Snow

Pretty good movie. Guy Pierce and Piper Perabo and in it. It kept my interest till the very end. Kind of a murder mystery who dunnit kind of movie. Not really all put together till the end. A definte renter.

La Vie En Rose

I never knew anything about Edith Piaf - now I do. I loved this movie, which told her story - mainly, I think, because of the actress playing Edith. She was amazing! (best actress, in my book, from what I have seen so far)
It is a bit too disjointed, with flashbacks, which get somewhat confusing - but, by the end, it all adds up to an extremely interesting life - and makes you want to read more of the details of her life. Her voice is like no other.

Atonement

This was a very good movie, and the cinematography was exceptional. So many close-ups, often small fragments, which spoke volumes. I loved that.
But, I have seen three of the films nominated for best picture, now, and none of the three, including this one, has wowed me. All three are equally as good, but each one is of a different category, to me, so they are difficult to compare. See this, though.

Juno

This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. It's sweet, funny, and fresh. And I love Ellen Paige. However, to me, it wasn't a knock-your-sox-off movie - the way I hope an Oscar winning movie should be.

The Bourne Ultimatum

This was pretty good, for what it was. One long, involved chase after another, several fights which went on too long, a really evil bad guy, and Matt Damon. I liked it - for what it was.

I'm Reed Fish

I liked this movie mostly because of the "small-town-full-of- characters" charm (which I always like),the lead character, the music, and the unusual twist of a movie within a movie. However, I think I need to watch it one more time to figure out who is playing who. I must have missed something because there seemed to be an extra girl at the end, and I don't remember her. (the girl looking out the limo roof with him)

Amazing Grace

This is a very good movie - about a man fighting to abolish slavery. It dragged on a bit, but it was worth seeing. In it, the man who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace" is played by Albert Finney, whose acting I always love!

Waitress

I loved this movie. There was alot of truth in it. And it made me want to make pies!!

No Country For Old Men

I wonder if a movie EVER lives up to your expectations when it is SO RAVED ABOUT beforehand. This one, as usual, did not.
It was a good movie, yes. The cinematography, the directing, the acting - all were very good. Extremely violent, which everyone knows by now, anyway, so no big surprise there.
Maybe that's it - I wasn't surprised by anything. I won't say anything more about it, because I know you will see it. And then, let me know what YOU think.

Waitress

I loved this movie. And it had nothing to do with how cute Keri Russell is!

Rescue Dawn

I guess this movie was O.K - but it didn't do much for me. I think it was because I didn't care for the lead character - perhaps just his acting, in that role. And it was much less about the rescue and more about his captivity. It is worth watching though.

The Namesake

I liked this movie very much. Its about an Indian family in the U.S.

The Kingdom

Good movie - GREAT ending! ( what did you whisper in his/her ear? )
That said it all! And I loved the guy who played the Saudi who was killed in the end.

In this charming contemporary musical helmed by John Carney, a street musician (Glen Hansard) in Dublin, Ireland, strikes up a friendship with a migrant street hawker (Markéta Irglová). Over the course of a busy week, they compose, rehearse and record a series of songs that mirror the duo's burgeoning romance -- and help the young busker release his musical passions. The actors wrote the tunes they perform in this film that was recognized at Sundance 2007.

Another great hidden movie. This is a new type of musical. But it doesn't seem like one.
The actors are great. This movie has so much heart. You'll love it.

The Kingdom.

I liked this better than i thought when i started to watch it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole movie.

Jamie Fox and Jennifer Garner are really becoming good actors.

Reign Over me.

I loved this movie. Adam Sandler has come up with some stink-O movies, think Happy Gilmore, but the last couple of movie, where he does dramatic roles, are his foretay. This movie and Punch Drunk Love have got to be a couple of his best.

Here's what it's about...
Consumed with grief after losing his family in the World Trade Center attacks, a widower (Adam Sandler) seeks help from his former college roommate (Don Cheadle), who's now a dentist. Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger) directs this thought-provoking look at friendship and post-Sept. 11 society in New York City, co-starring Liv Tyler, Saffron Burrows and Jada Pinkett Smith.

A beautiful movie, scenery-wise, set in the Sierra Nevada Mountains around the time the railroads were being built out there. I watched this with 3 other people - all of whom gave up on this movie and went to bed. The story was, maybe, just O.K., but I liked it. I liked the period feel of it. If you miss, or misunderstand, the very beginning scenes, then the entire movie will not make sense.

Interesting, but achingly sad - especially Glenn Close's line, "If you pray for something, be very specific." That line IS the movie, to me.

Not worth watching. The ending is totally confusing and unsatisfying - after you've slogged through the whole, long, slow story!
